Trends for bio-based specialty polymers as natural
ingredients for use in cosmetic formulations
Today, the trend of using green, sustainable,
natural ingredients and additives is increasing in the market for cosmetics and body care products. The reason for this trend is the perceived negative effects synthetic materials have on health and the environment. The increase in consumer awareness with respect to the environment, health, safety and knowledge of risks associated with synthetic chemicals, increases interest in natural cosmetics. Natural cosmetics should have a positive impact on the environment, biodiversity and health due to the reduction of pollutants versus the synthetic based products. They are developed from natural ingredients and free of chemicals, coloring additives and other synthetic mixtures.
The market for natural polymer ingredients is constantly growing due to a wide range of applications in development of cosmetic products. The cosmetics industry invests significantly in development of
natural ingredients and functional additives, especially in
bio-based specialty polymers. Incorporation of polymers in personal care and cosmetic ingredients results in performance improvement of products with respect to water resistance and various long-lasting properties. Recently, developments of natural,
bio-based specialty polymers in personal care products have focused on combining hydrophobic and hydrophilic polymers into block and star copolymers that stabilize products. Natural polymers in cosmetic products include natural ingredients such as polysaccharides, starch and cellulose derivatives, xanthan gum, guar gum, carrageenan, alginates, pectin, gelatin, agar, hydrolyzed proteins. A wide range of bio-based specialty polymers employed in various cosmetic products perform as surfactants, emulsifiers, emollients, and rheology modifiers. The main applications of natural polymers in cosmetics are
skincare and hair care products, sun care, film forming agents, color cosmetics, and toiletries.
