CI 17200 is a common synthetic colorant that imparts a purple-red color similar to the color of a red beetroot to a product. It is allowed for use as a colorant in multiple cosmetic products. It is permitted for use in colored ingestible drugs, externally applied drugs and cosmetics, mouthwashes, and dentifrices in the United States. CI 17200 is also used in the European Union, Japan, and other countries. It has been approved by the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) for limited use in cosmetics and is not approved for use in cosmetics that are applied around the eyes. What is CI 17200 used for?

CI 17200 is used as a colorant in cosmetics including hair dyes, skin care products, toiletries, washing and cleaning products, air care products, disinfectants, perfumes, and fragrances. It can also be found in some skin care products such as body wash, liquid hand wash, shampoo, conditioner, bar soap, lipstick, lip gloss, hand sanitizer. It is permitted to be used at a maximum concentration of 0.5% in non-oxidative hair dye products.

Origin

It is manufactured synthetically by coupling diazotized aniline with, 5-amino-4-hydroxy-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid (commonly known as H-acid) in alkaline conditions. The resulting reaction produces the main component, the disodium salt of 5-amino-4-hydroxy-3-(phenylazo)-2,7-naphthalenedisulfonic acid, along with many byproducts.
