LANXESS to Present Extensive Portfolio for Personal Care Products at in-cosmetics GlobalLANXESS will be presenting its comprehensive portfolio of preservatives, multifunctionals, flavors and fragrances for cosmetics and personal care products as well as solutions for oral care at the in-cosmetics Global show in Paris from April 16 to 18.

Within its Consumer Protection segment, the specialty chemicals company offers numerous products that ensure the protection and well-being of consumers. The company is one of the world’s leading suppliers of benzoates, phenoxyethanol and other high-quality preservative solutions.

Range Extends from Traditional to Nature-identical & Natural Solutions

Preservatives from LANXESS are used in leave-on and rinse-off products such as face creams and shampoos, shower gels, deodorants, and make-up can be found in many well-known branded products worldwide. The range extends from traditional to nature-identical and natural solutions that are authorized for use under green label certifications, such as the EU Ecolabel, Ecocert, NATRUE, COSMOS, and Nordic Swan.

LANXESS’s diverse product portfolio covers a wide selection of preservatives, multifunctionals and other personal care ingredients for different pH ranges and end product requirements. LANXESS brands for the personal care sector include Purox, Neolone, Kathon, Bioban, Oxone, Solbrol and Purolan, and Kalama. Typical applications include lotions, moisturizers and creams, soaps, shampoos and conditioners, wipes, feminine hygiene products, and oral care products.

Solbrol, Neolone, Purox, Kathon and Purolan have a long history of use as globally trusted, effective preservatives. Skin care and deodorant products featuring the COSMOS-approved Purolan TEC offer sensory enhancements to the consumer’s experience. Furthermore, Purolan isoparaffins give formulators a high-performing ingredient with great compatibility in demanding SPF formulations.

Derived from potassium monopersulfate, Oxone is a powerful non-chlorine oxidizing agent that is committed to upholding oral hygiene. It plays a vital role in stain removal and whitening in oral care products such as denture cleansers.

High-purity, More Sustainable Solutions for Innovative Products

Demand for milder and more sustainable products is increasing in the cosmetics and personal care market. More and more multifunctional ingredients are being used to provide customers with the best possible formulation support. The aim is to reduce conventional ingredients, strengthen the effectiveness of individual ingredients or even replace them completely. On their own or in combination with multifunctional ingredients, the products cover a broad pH spectrum and also enable the cosmetics and care industry to offer products with pH values above 5.5.

Bettina Blottko, head of the Material Protection Products business unit at LANXESS, says, “Today’s consumers are increasingly aware of what is contained in everyday products and how these ingredients affect their health and the environment. With our broad product portfolio and innovation pipeline, we can offer a wide range of preservation solutions to meet this need. LANXESS has a global network of experts who develop formulations, including the associated microbiological know-how. Coupled with technical service and regulatory expertise, we support our customers’ sustainable growth in such highly regulated markets.”

CO2-friendly Alternatives and Nature-based Products

LANXESS also offers more sustainable product alternatives for the majority of its portfolio of preservatives, fragrances, and flavors. The company relies on biodegradable products that are either made from natural raw materials or products that enable manufacturers to reduce their carbon footprint along the entire value chain. As a further measure, a lot of LANXESS’ sites are now certified to the ISCC PLUS standard.

LANXESS also offers a naturally derived product based on ethyl lauroyl arginate HCl (LAE) under the Neolone BioG Preservative brand. LAE is a highly effective preservative derived from natural raw materials such as sugar beet and corn and can be used in leave-on and rinse-off cosmetic products such as creams, face masks, cleansers, hair conditioners, and wet wipes. It has excellent broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, yeasts, and molds. It is most stable between pH 3 and 6 and performs best in personal care products with low anion content. At recommended use levels, Neolone BioG Preservative is non-irritating and non-sensitizing. The product complies with the COSMOS standard, is certified with the NATRUE label, and meets the definition of a naturally derived ingredient according to ISO 16128 as well as the requirements of the LANXESS Scopeblue label.

Highly Sustainable Sodium Benzoate

Purox S Scopeblue is the climate-friendlier alternative to the established product Purox S, the nature-identical and readily biodegradable sodium benzoate. LANXESS uses the Scopeblue brand label to identify its own products whose CO2 footprint is at least 50 percent lower than that of conventional products or which consist of at least 50 percent sustainable raw materials. Purox S Scopeblue is produced with green energy and renewable raw materials. As a result, it is basically climate-neutral according to the mass balance approach. As it is technically identical to standard Purox S, manufacturers do not need to make any formulation changes when converting to the Scopeblue variant. Purox S Scopeblue is an excellent solution for formulators who want to take advantage of the reliable preservative effect of sodium benzoate in formulations with a low CO2 footprint.

Dr. Michael Zobel, head of the Flavors & Fragrances (F&F) business unit at LANXESS, says, “The newly available Purox S Scopeblue, which is based on renewable raw materials, has a reduced product carbon footprint of up to 100 percent and helps to reduce the overall carbon footprint of personal care products containing our benzoate. With the introduction of ISCC PLUS certified products using the mass balance approach, we are responding to the demand for gentle, effective and environmentally friendly preservatives for the cosmetic and fragrance industries.”

Presentations on Customized Preservation Solutions

Dr. Hannah Nowotarski, technical applications manager, and Dr. Matthias Kunze, business development manager, will give a presentation entitled “Harmony in Preservation: Tailored Solutions for Safe Products” on April 17 at 10:35 a.m. in “Theatre 3” at the trade fair. The presentation will explain the key factors that influence effective preservation and how LANXESS’ diverse portfolio of traditional and multifunctional ingredients can improve the shelf life, quality, and safety of products.

Boosters and multifunctional agents, among others, will be highlighted.
