in-cosmetics Global Announces Details of Its Expanded Sustainability Zonein-cosmetics Global, one of the leading global events dedicated to personal care ingredients, has announced the details of its expanded Sustainability Zone ahead of its return to Paris, France from 16-18 April 2024.

Discover Environmental and Social Sustainability Initiatives

Sustainability remains a crucial topic impacting the entire cosmetics and personal care industry; according to the event’s research partner, Euromonitor International, more than 60% of consumers have tried to have a positive impact on the environment. Further to this, Mintel’s Global Beauty and Personal Care Trends found that educational initiatives, including accessible resources and expert advice, will empower consumers to make informed choices, building brand loyalty and trust.

The Sustainability Zone, in partnership with The Green Chemist Consultancy and Ecovia Intelligence, is devoted to inspiring, offering information, and uncovering opportunities for brands to be more sustainable. This year, the Zone encompasses other features, including the Sustainability Display and Theatre, both sponsored by AAK, and the Sustainability Pavilion, powered by Farmforce, which provides a dedicated space for visitors to identify and explore sustainable solutions across the entire cosmetics value chain.

The interactive Display area will allow delegates to discover environmental and social sustainability initiatives, while the Theatre will provide expert guidance via sessions on the different approaches that brands can take to improve their sustainability credentials.

Plus, the new Sustainability Zone Forum - curated by Dr. Barbara Olioso, managing director of The Green Chemist Consultancy - is a one-day program aimed at visitors looking to discover the eco-evolution of the cosmetics industry.

The Natural Transition

Opening the Sustainability Zone Theatre’s program of sessions will be Dr. Olioso, discussing how recent eco-claim regulations necessitate transparent supply chains for product ingredients.

The beauty industry has discovered innovative ways to repurpose discarded materials into new products, opening new avenues in the supply chain. Exploring this trend in the Theatre, Alejandro Franco, co-founder & CCO of Kaffe Bueno, will lead a session on ‘Upcycling coffee to accelerate the transition to natural’, explaining the vital yet challenging aspects of transitioning to natural resources.

Muriel Cuilleret, strategic account manager and France sales manager - Personal Care at Ashland, will showcase the company’s commitment to sustainability during the session, ‘A 360° approach to responsible sourcing’, presenting its naturally derived portfolio, including guar- and cellulosic-derivatives and award-winning biofunctionals. The presentation will further dive into Ashland’s rigorous responsible sourcing processes, covering agricultural practices, environmental impact, human and societal considerations, and ensuring a secure and reliable supply chain aligned with evolving regulations.

Claims and Legislation

Engaging attendees on how emerging and evolving legislation to substantiate environmental claims is trending, Dr. Mark Smith, director general, NATRUE, the International Natural and Organic Cosmetics Association, will explore this topic in his session, ‘Substantiating environmental claims through certification’.

Also in the Theatre, Caroline Westerik-Sikking, director of Sustainability at AAK, will deliver two expert sessions. The former, ‘New sustainability legislation: Navigating the minefield without compromising impact on the ground’ will explore how incoming policies will profoundly shape how quickly and effectively the cosmetic industry can move to more sustainable practices. The latter, ‘How well do you understand the risks, mitigations, and associated impacts within the shea supply chain?’ Will examine how well cosmetic manufacturers truly understand the risks within the supply chain for improving local livelihoods and driving long-term impact.

A Solution-driven Approach

For attendees in search of inspiration from leading companies taking on sustainable initiatives, Haruhiko Doi, senior manager at Kao Chemicals, will host a presentation titled ‘New development of sustainable and functional botanical extract using highly controlled cultivation system’. Meanwhile, Marina Melendo, R&D junior specialist at Eurofragance, will highlight examples of green chemistry at its best during her session, ‘Unveiling a new active ingredient offered on the EuroPure™ platform to counteract malodors: Verdenix™’.

Other inspiring and topical sessions that will leave a lasting mark in the Theatre include, ‘From upcycling and COSMOS mutifunctional ingredients to carbon footprint reduction formulations’, from Melânia Maduro, compliance manager and Carla Morgado, global business development manager at EFPBIOTEK; and ‘How Lubrizol science delivers sustainable solutions to improve wellbeing’ by Mathilde Allègre, global sustainability manager beauty & home, Lubrizol.

Enriching Best Practices

New for 2024, the Sustainability Zone Forum has been created to share and discuss new advancements that deliver sustainability improvements. This one-day program includes sessions from leading experts in this space, opening with the Chairs opening remarks from Dr. Olioso, examining the applications of sustainability from corporate and financial perspectives, shared risk, and natural resource interconnections.

Francesca Morgane, senior manager Europe (Market Transformation), Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil – RSPO, will close the day with the session ‘Sustainable Palm Oil: a resource for the cosmetic industry to achieve environmental and social goals’. Other talks from Euromonitor International, Farmforce, Syensqo, Expressions Parfumées, OLVEA, Croda, ThePackHub, and RSPO will make up the Forum’s programme.

Attendance to the Forum is free, but due to high demand, seats are allocated on a first-come, first-served basis and it is recommended to arrive 15 minutes before each session.

Rewarding the Industry

Additionally, the show will introduce two new awards to the in-cosmetics Global Awards 2024; the Sustainable Stand Award and the Kenvue Trusted Science Award. The former recognizes companies that excel in incorporating sustainability into their stand designs. This comes in response to feedback from exhibitors such as Provital and Vytrus, as well as an increasing number of exhibitors incorporating a more sustainable approach to stand design.

Plus, the Green Ingredient Award, in partnership with Ecovia Intelligence, will return in 2024, honoring ingredients that play a vital role in the industry's pursuit of sustainability, encompassing both environmental and social contributions. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony and after party, sponsored by Kenvue, on 16 April 2024.

Speaking on the expanded Sustainability Zone, Roziani Zulkifli, event director, in-cosmetics Global, said, "We are thrilled to introduce the enhanced and expanded Sustainability Zone this year, which has been meticulously designed to be a platform for the personal care ingredients industry to discover opportunities on how to adopt green practices. Sustainability is embedded as one of the exhibition’s three core pillars, alongside science and innovation, and we look forward to helping visitors tap into these trends further.”

in-cosmetics Global, presented by KSM, returns from 16-18 April 2024 at the Porte de Versailles, Paris, France.
