Elementis R&D CenterElementis announces it will be opening a new unit in Portugal, featuring a center of excellence and R&D laboratory that will be the showcase for customers across Europe.

This new unit, which will be headquartered in Porto and is scheduled to open in the 1st half of 2024, will support both of Elementis' business segments – Personal Care and Performance Specialties, also reinforcing the current R&D capacity of the company's laboratories in Asia and the Americas.

Fostering Collaborations for Advancing Sustainable Chemistry

As part of this initiative, the company is implementing a recruitment plan to hire 100 skilled employees for the project.

By the end of 2024, Elementis expects to invest up to 3 million euros in Portugal to open the new unit, in addition to the expected annual investment of up to 6 million euros in people, facilities and laboratories. The profiles required are mostly in the areas of Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Legal, Commercial, Procurement, Research and Development and Supply Chain. Most employees based in Porto will collaborate with Elementis teams located in Europe and the Americas, while some of the roles will have a global scope.

The reasons for choosing Porto were, above all, the high quality of talent, the business environment beneficial to Elementis’ objectives and the infrastructure available in the city. In addition, Portugal is strategically located in a time zone that is ideal to meet the needs of customers and the company's other locations in the Americas and Europe.

In Porto, Elementis has also identified valuable opportunities for collaboration, including potential partnerships with esteemed institutions like Universidade Católica do Porto, through the Centre of Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF) from the Superior School of Biotechnology. Together, they plan to foster collaborations grounded in advancing sustainable chemistry, creating value and progressing talent. Elementis plans to recruit around 100 employees for Porto by the end of 2024. The recruitment process has already started and about 40 vacancies have already been advertised.

Elementis’ new location in Porto will be an open and inspiring space for our employees and customers to collaborate on practical demonstrations, presentations and training. We have ambitious plans to launch more than 50 new products by 2026, and this new location will play a crucial role in realizing those plans”, said Paul Waterman, CEO of Elementis.
