Vanillyl butyl ether is found in cosmetics and personal care items as a warming or cooling agent, an oral care ingredient, a hair conditioner, and a fragrance ingredient.
What is VANILLYL BUTYL ETHER used for?
Vanillyl butyl ether functions as a hair conditioning, masking or fragrance, oral care, and skin conditioning agent. In order to create a warming effect, it is also a key ingredient in personal care products. The warming sensation is brought on by neurons releasing glutamate, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and a number of neuropeptides.
As a hair conditioning agent, it makes the hair soft and supple, and making it easy to comb. As a fragrance agent, it enhances the smell of a product.
Origin
Vanillyl alcohol and n-butyl alcohol are primarily dehydrated and condensed using an acid catalyst, such as AlCl, to produce vanillyl butyl ether.
Safety profile
Vanillyl butyl ether has a score of 1 on the Environmental Working Group (EWG’s) skin deep scale, indicating low potential for cancer, allergies, immunotoxicity, developmental and reproductive toxicity, and use restrictions. However, it is capable of causing serious eye irritation and may cause an allergic skin reaction. It is considered a skin sensitizer based on the existing data. The Expert Panel for Fragrance Safety, n independent body, concludes that this material is safe based on the RIFM ( Research Institute for Fragrance Materials) Criteria Document.
