PPG-5-Ceteth-20 is a versatile ingredient and has many benefits to serve in cosmetics as well as personal care. The primary effect of this ingredient is creating a silky, dry layer on the skin that feels soft to touch and reducing the appearance of oil. PPG-5-Ceteth-20 has the same effect on hair and can therefore largely be found in hair care products. It is also present in cleansers and moisturizers.

What is PPG-5-CETETH-20 used for?

PPG-5-Ceteth-20 serves as a very essential ingredient in cosmetics and personal care. It can primarily be found in products like shampoos, conditioners and moisturizers.

Hair care: It acts as an emollient in hair care products. It reduces the effects of oil and dirt on the shafts to leave them feeling clean and silky. This ingredient is very mild and can therefore be found in products child shampoos
Skin care: It has the same effect on skin. It forms a protective layer on the surface that feels smooth to touch. At the same time, PPG-5-Ceteth-20 keeps the skin clean and hydrated underneath. It plays the role of a surfactant that reduces the surface tension of other ingredients to make the formulation more stable. This ingredient enables the even distribution of the cosmetic product on the surface

Origin

PPG-5-Ceteth-20 is a synthetic ingredient that is a polyoxypropylene, polyoxyethylene ether of cetyl alcohol. It is made by the ethoxylation process in the labs.

Safety profile

PPG-5-Ceteth-20 is safe to be used in personal care and cosmetic products up to the concentrations of 20%. However, it does pose some moderate hazards if contaminated during manufacturing. PPG-5-Ceteth-20 can get contaminated primarily by ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane which are known to be carcinogens. Proper filtration procedures can eliminate these risks.
