COCOYL GLUTAMIC ACID

CAS Number 210357-12-3
Chem/IUPAC Name: N-Cocoyl-L-Glutamic Acid
COSING REF No: 75451
COCOYL GLUTAMIC ACID
Cocoyl Glutamic Acid is the Coconut Acid amide of Glutamic Acid, and it functions as a skin-conditioning, hair-conditioning, and surfactant-cleansing agent in cosmetics and personal care products. It improves the lather in personal care products like shampoos and soap bars. It is white to pale yellow in color available in a flake form.

What is COCOYL GLUTAMIC ACID used for?

Cocoyl Glutamic Acid is used in personal care products like shampoos and cleansing bars as a surfactant. Because the molecule is amphoteric and has both positive and negative charges on its ends, it can be used to clean surfaces of oil-based deposits like grease and remove contaminants that are water-soluble at the same time. Depending on whether there are more hydrophobic residues present, it can perform tasks like degreasing, emulsifying, and defatting with either acidic or alkaline mediums.

It has the ability to cleanse and remove dirt from hair or skin without stripping away moisture. It can be used to make milder detergents for use on skin or hair while reducing foaminess or improving lather qualities. It is frequently used as an emulsifier, which keeps various product ingredients together. It also softens the skin and makes the hair easy to comb while making hair soft, and increasing its volume. It can be formulated into a wide range of cosmetic formulations such as facial cleansers, shampoo/conditioner, shaving cream, mouthwash, bar soap & body wash. It is used at a maximum concentration of 24% in rinse-off products.

Origin

Coconut acid obtained from coconut oil is reacted with L-glutamic acid to produce the unneutralised amino acid surfactant called Cocoyl Glutamic Acid.

What does COCOYL GLUTAMIC ACID do in a formulation?

  • Cleansing
  • Hair conditioning
  • Skin conditioning
  • Surfactant

Safety profile

The safety of amino acid alkyl amides, such as cocoyl glutamic acid, which serve as conditioners for the skin and hair as well as surfactants-cleansing agents in personal care products, was examined by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The Panel came to the conclusion that amino acid alkyl amides are safe in the present practices of use and concentration in cosmetics after carefully examining the pertinent animal and human data that were presented.
