An Interview with Daniel Pando, CEO of Nanovex Biotechnologies

INdermal being the cosmetics wing of Nanovex, has improvised the encapsulation and active ingredient delivery technology from the medical to the cosmetics field. This adaptation has resulted in a range of specific delivery systems tailored for each cosmetic target.

The INdermal nanovesicles based on drug delivery technology, having Natural and COSMOS certifications are unique in the market and bring the latest advances in biotechnology closer to the world of natural products which are of increasing importance to the consumer.


We talked to Daniel Pando, CEO of Nanovex Biotechnologies, to delve deeper into their distinctive delivery systems for cosmetics and the unique features of these systems that position them as a cut above the rest of their competitors in the industry.


#1 – Can you tell us about the history of Nanovex and key areas of specialization?


Nanovex is a Spanish biotechnological company founded in 2014 specializing in the design, development, and manufacture of nano-systems for drug delivery applications. These nanosystems are capable of protecting, transporting, and specifically delivering the active ingredients enabling targeted action to a specific area.

At first, Nanovex was focused on developing nano-delivery systems for pharmaceutical applications. The key areas of specialization were intracellular delivery, cancer treatment, brain targeting, ocular delivery, and diabetes.


#2 – Please tell us about the inception of INdermal and how you replicated your existing delivery system for cosmetics.


In 2019, we decided to apply our knowledge in developing new clinical treatments based on our advanced technology in delivery systems to the cosmetic industry, that’s how INdermal was born, the industrial cosmetic division of Nanovex Biotechnologies.

We have adapted our technology and transferred it from medicine to dermo-cosmetics, creating a series of delivery systems capable of protecting and delivering the cosmetic active ingredients to the target areas (deep epidermis, corneal layer, capillary fiber, and hair follicle), conserving their properties and increasing their efficiency up to 20 times.

The use of pharmaceutical-grade compounds and an exclusive manufacturing methodology provide our products with an extraordinary level of stability and ease of operation, which makes them ideal for the development of high-quality and efficient dermo-cosmetics and cosmeceutical products.


#3 – What are the different types of delivery systems and their application?


We developed four delivery systems and we are currently working on developing delivery systems with exosomes which will be launched soon.

Deep Delivery SystemDeep delivery systems
The use of these “Deep Delivery” systems enables up to 20 times the amount of active ingredient to reach the interior of the skin compared to when applied freely. In addition, the encapsulated active ingredients in these deep delivery systems penetrate the skin quickly and safely, without undergoing changes in their molecular structure thereby retaining their functionality at the point of delivery.


Corneum Delivery SystemCorneum delivery systems
The “Corneum Delivery” systems are especially useful for the encapsulation of alpha-hydroxy acids as they facilitate a very low pH level in the nanovesicles, irrespective of the average pH where they are made. As a consequence, practically all of the acid concentration in the nanovesicle remains unseparated until its release in the stratum corneum. This facilitates a reduction in the necessary dosage of AHA and the use of more physiologically formulated pHs.

The “Hair Delivery” systems produced by INdermal are particularly effective in the conduction and protection of protein molecules, given that the encapsulation avoids their degradation during the cosmetic product’s formulation, a process which frequently damages the peptide chains through temperature shear stress thereby considerably diminishing their functionality and with that, the results of the treatment.

The “Follicular Delivery” system that INdermal produces is particularly effective in the protection and conduction of 5-α reductase ingredient inhibitors, given that it facilitates their reaching the sebaceous gland via the main excreting sebaceous conduit in the hair follicle, being the specific delivery target of these advanced and new generation nanovesicles.


#4 – What are the services offered by INdermal for their customers? (FYI: I am referring to the custom design section…)


At INdermal, we have the possibility to develop the delivery system that you need in a flexible and economical manner. We can offer whatever type of nanoencapsulation system that the formulations may require as if it were an extension of your own RnD department, including all of the technical documentation and certificates.

We offer the encapsulation of all classes of active ingredients, systems, and various active ingredients in the same nanovesicle, custom-designed systems compatible with all types of cosmetic forms, and optimization of deep, superficial, capillary, and follicular deliveries.


#5 – What is the specialty of the Vegan COSMOS delivery system?


By way of contrast to the traditional liposomes used in cosmetics which are formulated with soy lecithin and manufactured with basic methodology, INdermal offers a new generation of nanovesicles that are custom designed to the active ingredient they contain and to the cosmetic target of the skin where they are to be delivered.

By adding active ingredients encapsulated by INdermal you can get much more efficient products as they can deliver up to 20 times as many more active ingredients to the target layer of the skin, easily achieve stability, improve cosmeticity and organoleptic properties of the products, and reduce cost by improving the efficiency of high-cost active ingredients.

#6 – What makes INdermal unique from its competitors?

Daniel Pando has a PhD in Chemical Engineering specializing in the design, development, and manufacturing of drug delivery systems for applications in medicine and cosmetics. In addition, he has completed his training with different master's degrees: PRL, Process Engineering, Project Management, and MBA, adding more than 15 years of experience in the field of encapsulation and drug delivery.

He is currently the CEO and co-founder of Nanovex Biotechnologies, a company that uses drug delivery technology for the development of new drugs and therapies, and its cosmetic division INdermal, which uses the same technology to develop highly efficient cosmetic active ingredients.
