Consumers Choose Naturals

SpecialChem / Nancy Jeffries – Dec 8, 2010

Consumers are making their preferences known for natural and organic beauty and personal care. Growing concern about chemicals in beauty and personal care products continues to spur manufacturers and marketers to emphasize the natural, botanically based, or organic ingredients that comprise today's products in response to a general upswing of interest in the beauty market. With more customers clearly exhibiting a preference for plant-based, organic, or marine-infused beauty products, and concerns about chemicals at the forefront, a plethora of "natural" ethically-sourced, or environmentally-friendly alternatives have appeared on the scene.Despite a proliferation of standards, consumers want to know they are making safe cosmetic choices, and whether a brand is organic certified, or offers fair trade sanctions, or cruelty free labels, customers want to feel they are purchasing something that is safe for use, and safer for the planet. This shift is impacting mainstream brands as well as niche offerings, and while brands like Weleda and Aubrey continue as mainstays of personal care, private label and niche brands are making additional forays into the market.
