Symrise-USDA-CertifiedSymrise’s multifunctional ingredient, Hydrolite® 5 green has been certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), that 100 percent of the cosmetic active ingredient comes from renewable sources.

Hydrolite® 5 green Moisturizes the Skin

The product will carry the USDA Certified Biobased Product label from now on. Hydrolite® 5 green is produced from sugar cane byproduct moisturizes the skin, enhances the effectiveness of many ingredients in cosmetic formulations and improves the appearance, consistency and protection of cosmetics.

Hydrolite® 5 green has now successfully gone through the certification process. The multifunctional ingredient entered the market recently. Symrise presented it to the public for the first time at the in-cosmetics Latin America trade show in São Paolo, Brazil, on 19 and 20 September 2018. The active ingredient made from sugar cane can be used by cosmetic manufacturers in many different applications.

With Hydrolite® 5 green, we are making an important contribution to environmental protection. By consistently focusing on sustainable solutions, we are taking responsibility for future generations,” said Najeeb Hakimi, Product Manager at Symrise.

Encourage Use of Renewable Raw Materials

Products based on renewable raw materials make an important contribution to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions since they enable products based on fossil fuels to be replaced. Created in 2002, the USDA BioPreferred® Program aims to increase the development, marketing and use of sustainable products. The BioPreferred® Program also includes a label that shows the proportion of renewable raw materials in an item. More than 3,500 products are already allowed to display the label.

Consumers are becoming more aware of sustainability and are increasingly asking for natural products, especially for cosmetics. According to a Persistence Market Research study, the global market volume for natural and organic personal care is expected to reach USD 22 billion by 2024. The figure is even higher with natural products in general. In 2016 alone, sales contributed USD 459 billion to the U.S. economy, as a study by the U.S. Department of Agriculture has shown. This represents an increase of 17 percent compared to 2014.

The demand for natural ingredients in cosmetics is increasing globally. Similarly, the demand is growing for multifunctional ingredients, since consumers want short, transparent lists of ingredients,” added Hakimi.

Our multifunctional active ingredient Hydrolite® 5 green consists of 100 percent Biobased content and offers our customers a renewable and sustainable alternative. The USDA Certified Biobased Product label underlines Symrise’s commitment to sustainability and transparency.”
