in-cosmetics Formulation Summit to Focus on Eco-conscious ConsumersFrom 19-20 November, the in-cosmetics Formulation Summit will return to London, providing R&D teams with an invaluable, deep dive into one of the most important trends driving the beauty industry. This year, the organizers have revealed the conference will address the formulation challenges and opportunities around creating products for eco-conscious and health-conscious consumers.

Discussing Trends Driving the Beauty Industry

In recent times, the once niche clean beauty trend has gone mainstream, with the Soil Association Certification reporting that sales of certified natural and organic products totaled £86.5m in 2018. Incredibly, the sector has seen eight straight years of growth and there are now more than 800 brands producing 10,000-plus products that are COSMOS certified.

Speaking about this year’s Formulation Summit, Dr Andrea Mitarotonda – the former Head of R&D at Neal’s Yard Remedies who is helping curate this year’s event – commented: “Consumers are continuing to seek out products developed with ‘green formulations’ – those that have free from claims and are marketed as clean beauty. Homing in on these areas, the program will address the science, safety and regulatory challenges around formulating personal care products for today's conscious consumer.”

Last Year’s Highly Acclaimed Formulation Summit

Last year’s highly acclaimed Formulation Summit – which focused on personalization and customizable beauty – attracted representatives from Beiersdorf, Benefit Cosmetics, Charlotte Tilbury, Coty, Johnson & Johnson, L’Oreal, Rituals and Unilever. And Dr Mitarotonda is aiming to attract a similarly stellar list of attendees to this year’s two-day Formulation Summit, which will be split into three themes: good for the planet, good for the body and good for the mind.

Topics to be Discussed this Year

Among the topics being discussed this year will be preservation and efficacy challenges, sustainable formulation practices, green ingredients and a thought-provoking discussion around packaging. The first speakers have already been confirmed, with a host of industry leaders expected to join Professor Steven Howdle, an authority in Green Chemistry from the University of Nottingham, Marie Loden from the Eviderm Institute AB, author and journalist Patricia Thomas, L’Oreal’s Amit Tewari and Karl Lintner, the founder of Kal'idées, over the coming weeks.

In addition to the educational content that will be presented, attendees will be able to take advantage of the unrivalled networking opportunities. With 84% of attendees in 2018 holding a senior position, delegates can meet new contacts from across the global scientific community to discuss ideas, insights and the future of the beauty industry.
