CES 2020: New Digital Innovations Disrupting the Cosmetics Industry

Be it testing or product development, several companies are now increasingly developing algorithms for evaluating overall appearance and consumer needs.

These algorithms are now able to suggest the right products for specific skin types and therefore personalizing the complete beauty experience.

At the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), we see a variety of next-gen innovations utilizing smart technologies to improve daily beauty regimens.

L'Oréal 3-in-1 Device for Personalized Skin Care Makes Debut


Perso by L'Oréal is an AI-powered at-home system for beauty personalization developed using L'Oréal Technology Incubator. It features a streamlined four-step process to deliver on-the-spot skincare and cosmetic formulas that optimize for increasing levels of personalization over time.



According to L'Oréal, the device can also create custom formulas for lipstick and foundation (capabilities scheduled for launch on later date)

With a patented motorized cartridge system, Perso creates personalized skincare formulas in four steps:

  • Personal skin analysis: Utilizes L'Oréal-owned ModiFace AI technology to analyze the user's overall skin condition—including deep wrinkles, fine lines, the appearance of dark spots, and pore visibility.
  • Environmental assessment: Breezometer geo-location data helps assess local environmental conditions (weather, UV index, temperature, etc. that can influence the state of the user's skin.
  • Product preference: Enables users to provide personal skincare concerns, including fine lines, dark spots, pigmentation, pore size, radiance, and dullness.
  • Custom formulation and dispensing: This collective data creates a personalized blend of high-performance skincare, dispensed in a perfectly portioned, single dose at the top of the device for easy, clean application.  


Procter & Gamble Introduces New Era of Brushing


Oral-B-Power-BrushOral-B iO by P&G is an innovative brushing technology utilizing artificial intelligence. It provides a truly sensorial experience resulting in a smooth, quiet and sensational cleaning experience.

According to the company, the experience can transform the act of brushing teeth for users from something they have to do into something they want to do. In clinical tests, Oral-B iO provided a deeper cleaning of teeth and gums, allowing users to easily and effectively maintain oral health.

The Oral-B iO includes five key pillars of design features and experience capabilities:

  • Linear Magnetic Drive
  • Superior Cleaning Action and Redesigned Brush Head
  • Bimodal Smart Pressure Sensor
  • Smart Display with Personalized Brushing Modes
  • Artificial Intelligence Tracking via the Oral-B iO App

P&G LifeLab event display also includes the Heated Razor by GilletteLabs. It delivers a sustained heat sensation via an innovative warming bar and provides the pleasure of a hot towel with every stroke that lasts throughout the entire shave.


Advanced Skincare System by P&G Ventures


After its successful debut at CES 2019, this year P&G Ventures returns with Opte Precision Skincare System - the first personalized handheld inkjet printer to instantly make the appearance of skin's hyperpigmentation disappear and fade spots over time.

Opte will return to CES as a prestigious Innovation Award Honoree to offer an inside look at how the device has progressed.

How does it work?


  • The Opte wand scans the skin with an enhanced digital camera that captures 200 frames per second and instantly analyzes each image using a proprietary algorithm to detect tonal imperfections not visible to the human eye. Using input from the algorithm.
  • Opte precisely prints via a new-to-the-world, custom thermal inkjet printer and cartridge, depositing picolitre droplets of Spot Optimizing Serum on target areas until there is a perfect color match with the surrounding skin tone.
  • Correcting in real time, Opte also faces the appearance of sun damage and hyperpigmentation spots over time.

Making its debut at this year’s show, NEUTROGENA Skin360 app combines advanced skin imaging, behavior coaching and artificial intelligence. It empowers consumers with actionable, personalized steps to help achieve their skin health goals. The app helps bridge the gap in knowledgeable, personalized, science-based skincare and supports users in sticking to a routine that helps deliver their personal skin health goals.

Based on NEUTROGENA® AI Assistant (NAIA™), the app aims to build a relationship with users by initiating a text conversation to determine their skincare personality, approach to skincare and current routine. NAIA then helps users identify an 8-week skincare goal that is monitored and supported with behavioral coaching.

3D Face Mask Printing System by Amorepacific


Korea's beauty company Amorepacific presents its 3D face mask printing system (IOPE Tailored 3D Mask).

Amorepacific's face mask 3D printing system is created in collaboration with the 3D printing system developer Lincsolution in 2017. It uses its own smartphone app to instantly measure users' facial dimensions, printing a personalized hydrogel mask that caters to individual facial features and skin conditions.

Recognized as a CES 2020 Innovation Award Honoree, the face mask 3D printing technology will be available to consumers through Amorepacific's lab-based skincare brand IOPE.
