Interview with George Hammer, founder of Urban Retreat and U R Beautiful

SpecialChem / Imogen Matthews – Oct 25, 2007

George Hammer could be described as a visionary. He was the man who brought Jane Fonda's aerobic dance concept from California to London in 1975, pioneering the fitness craze that is still in full swing today. By 1980, he recognised that Covent Garden was an up and coming area and launched the world's first day spa, called The Sanctuary, which is now also a well established bath and body spa brand. He was also the man who brought Aveda to the UK, opening the Aveda Institute in Covent Garden, which included superlative training facilities for Aveda employees. Then in 2001, he joined forces with Harrods to open the world's first "super salon" called Urban Retreat, offering a wide range of holistic and wellbeing oriented treatments. He is the first to recognise the power of "experts" and has signed up an impressive roster of people with unrivalled expertise in their fields, bringing an extra dimension to the Urban Retreat concept. George Hammer is now off on a new adventure, to bring affordable salon and treatment services to the UK high street.
