Here is my in-cosmetics Global 2018 ‘round-up’ of the hot and happening launches and trends on display…

Highlights from the Event

Sustainability was One of the Hottest Topics at the Show

There was not only an entire section dedicated to sustainable material launches and presentation, but it was a key feature of promoting raw materials at many booths – too many to mention here!

Sustainability Corner at in-cosmetics Global 2018  − Not only was sustainability a feature through raw material sourcing such as bio-fermentation and natural crop rotation, but also through innovative use of food waste.

 − Sustainability was also demonstrated through the use of cold-processing and/or minimal processing techniques (and therefore reduced energy use throughout the manufacturing process), as well as water-free or low-water formulation principles and actives.

Without a sustainability message, your brand could be missing out in the coming year!

Minimalist Formulations from Multi-functional Ingredients

There was a definite trend to use multi-functional materials to create high performing ingredients from 10 ingredients or less, yielding simpler INCI lists. Where formulas could be simplified without compromising efficacy, aesthetics or shelf life, the ingredients which provided more than one function and/or marketing claim were a clear favorite.

Sulphates are Out

Sulphate-free Surfactant Alternative Launches at Innovation ZoneThere were multiple ‘sulphate-free’ surfactant alternatives offering mildness and performance, including several practical lab sessions where attendees could get hands on with materials to solve the formulation issues going sulphate-free can pose.

In the Innovation Zone we also saw launches following this concept with Galsoft GLI 21 (Galaxy Surfactants) and Akypo Foam LM25 (Kao Chemicals Europe).

Seeing is Believing

Encapsulates, a big trend in Korea in 2017, is filtering to the West based on the number of encapsulation displays on show in Amsterdam.

An innovative launch extending this concept included Kiwi (and other) fruit pieces that can be added to foaming formulations worked with in the Formulation Lab as well as Tureen Cotton Exfoliating Millistrands in the Innovation Zone (both by Gallium Limited).

Customization on the Rise

Presented on in a Marketing Trends session and in the Formulation Lab, examples of where cosmetic customization is already happening, and formulation tips on how to create this for your own brand, were a hot topic.

As consumers are increasingly seeking product options that address their specific skin needs, offering consumer with self-selection solutions is a future trend to incorporate into your range.

Color Trends

Having shifted from bold, color blocking fashion, we are now seeing the strong trend toward more pastel shades for eyes and face with pinks and plums for lips. A matte look is key for lips while nail polishes and eye shadows are taking on metallic hues – not just gold, silver and bronze, but metallic are also incorporated into those pretty pinks and plums (and for the nails, still some bolder blues and blacks!).

Functional materials launched to achieve matte perfection in the Innovation Zone included ImerCare® Matte (Imerys Minerals) and Vivapur CS Sensory 5 (J. Rettenmaier & Sohne – also a great PMMA replacement!)
