Emulsifiers: natural or synthetic?

SpecialChem / Jun 1, 2010

The use of emulsifiers in color cosmetics, my area of expertise, is prevalent but not as widespread as in the personal care and treatment area. Personal care formulators have much more exposure to emulsifiers due to the fact that most of the products they utilize are emulsion-based. That doesn't mean that we don't use emulsifiers in color cosmetics. We still make foundations which use emulsions and the same concerns exist in this area. With the use of much more diverse and sensitive ingredients, the need for alternate functional ingredients such as emulsifiers is equally important. Many products require new technology to create them and conventional emulsifiers may not always work in all applications. The industry must evolve and so must the ingredients we use in cosmetics.
