Decorative Cosmetics will remain a big mover in the beauty industry in 2007. Would you believe that the Ancient Egyptians and Romans used cosmetics containing mercury compounds? Mercury and some of the other materials they used in products to beautify themselves are, in today's market, considered hazardous and unsafe for human use or consumption. I am certain that this is a trend we will not be following any time soon. The recent FDA and California rulings are looking out for the consumer's health and welfare. And REACH in Europe will see to it that no hazardous materials will make their way into our cosmetic and personal care products, including color and decorative cosmetics. If it is any indication of what has been observed in the past couple of years, the following trends are what we will be looking at for color and decorative cosmetics in 2007, and possibly beyond.
Decorative cosmetics account for 15% of sales in the entire personal care market segment. This represented approximately $24 billion US in total sales revenue in 2005.
