Botox and beyond – Topical botox and facial fillers. What is possible.

Figures from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show a 537% increase in botulinium toxin procedures between 2000 and 2008 taking the total number to 5,014,466 for the year! While that figure is quite amazing we need to understand that this treatment is not just for the vain. When injected into the muscle Botulinium Toxin prevents the release of acetylcholine (the chemical that tells the muscle to contract) until it is metabolised – a process that can take anywhere between two and six months. This ability to selectively turn off muscle contractions has been used to successfully manage some types of headache, excess sweating, muscle spasms and chronic pain.
