Active Ingredients for Skin Lightening and Hyperpigmentation Market – Part 2

SpecialChem / Vispi Kanga – Nov 26, 2008

In the first article we talked about hydroquinone and Arbutins. Recently the Scientific Committee on Consumer Products (SCCP) questioned the safety of the common skin whitener Kojic acid. Based on patch tests in human female volunteers the ingredient was shown to be a skin sensitizer in humans. When we talk about skin lightening let us not confuse this with Vitiligo which is a skin condition found primarily on people with darker skin tones which causes them to lose pigmentation on seemingly random patches of their skin. Monobenzone is used to treat people who suffer from Vitiligo. The most famous sufferer of Vitiligo is Michael Jackson and it is rumored that he used Monobenzone to treat it. The purpose of Monobenzone is to permanently remove color from normal skin surrounding the areas affected by Vitiligo. The effects of this treatment are irreversible and leave the user permanently sensitive to sunlight. Monobenzone is not to be used to treat other skin conditions such as freckles, melasma, age spots etc.
