Active Ingredients for Skin Lightening and Hyperpigmentation Market – Part 1

SpecialChem / Vispi Kanga – Nov 12, 2008

Color of the skin is an important attribute of beauty worldwide. The desire to use skin lightening products vary considerably between cultures. Hyperpigmentation is the most common and distressing condition afflicting people in Western countries. The demand for skin lightening products is rooted in the need to eliminate localized hyperpigmentation as well as to lighten the general skin tone. In Asian countries, skin lightening products are mainly used with the intent to lighten and brighten the skin tone though they also have a great need to treat Melasma (chloasma or localized discoloration). Disorders of hyperpigmentation are difficult to treat. It is estimated that eight out of 10 women and one in two men are concerned about serious dark circles under their eyes. The main purpose for skin lightening products is to lighten the skin as well as even out skin tone or to treat pigmentation disorders such as blemishes, pregnancy marks and age spots. Most skin lighteners currently in use are of botanical or natural origin.
