Lucas Meyer Cosmetics’ Natural Active Boosts Skin Microbiota IFF Lucas Meyer Cosmetics presents new prebiotic results for its IBR-Dragon®, an aqueous extract of special varieties of white-fleshed pitaya (Hylocereus undatus).

Correlated with its effective prebiotic activity, they also found that IBR-Dragon® increases skin radiance and decreases the appearance of wrinkles and visible spots for healthy, glowing, youthful skin.

IBR-Dragon® is COSMOS-approved, vegan-compatible, China-compliant, and aquatic ecosystem friendly.

Reduces Skin Inflammation and Irritation

In a competitive coculture in-vitro assay, IBR-Dragon® selectively supported the growth of beneficial commensal strains like S. epidermidis, while limiting the growth of detrimental strains S. aureus and P. acnes. Corresponding with this prebiotic activity, in a clinical setting, topical application of IBR-Dragon® increased skin microbiome phylogenetic diversity and decreased the abundance of opportunistic pathogens like C. tuberculostearicum (strengthening the microbial barrier).

IBR-Dragon® decreased TEWL (reinforcing the physical barrier). Last, IBR-Dragon® reduced skin inflammation and irritation, and strengthened skin resilience to histamine challenge (strengthening the immune barrier).

IBR-Dragon® was designed with the environment in mind, by using local product to ensure a minimal carbon footprint and reduce its environmental impact. Locally grown in Israel, dragon fruits are obtained by hand pollination and hand harvested.

Their partner farmers grow the pitaya in soilless systems. This system solves many soil-borne problems, enabling better pest control and more precise regulation of both irrigation and fertilization. Drip irrigation allows the delivery of water and nutrients closely and precisely to the vines’ roots.

IBR-Dragon® is then sustainably produced using a natural and environmentally friendly process to preserve a unique botanical composition. The extract is obtained by directly extracting the fruit in its own water, in a petrochemical solvent-free extraction process, and without additional water beyond the fruit's own. All biomass waste is repurposed as compost. IBR-Dragon® is COSMOS-approved, vegan-compatible, China-compliant and aquatic ecosystem friendly.

Prebiotics are nutrients that selectively support the growth of beneficial bacteria while limiting the growth of detrimental ones. Very often, prebiotics are made up of plant-based carbohydrates, especially non-digestible oligosaccharides. The pitaya (Dragon Fruit) is a naturally rich source of oligosaccharides with prebiotic efficacy.
