Givaudan Active Beauty has presented Silkgel, a unique vegan and sustainable biomimetic silk crafted by white biotechnology. The new hair care benefits of Silkgel were showcased during SCS Formulate in Coventry (UK) in November.
“The use of vegan silk yields outstanding benefits. The biodegradable polymers built a layer around the hair fiber that protects them from thermally or chemically induced structural damages,” said Kristin Schacht, Product Development Manager Biopolymers.

The biomimetic silk is produced by biotechnology and created to be natural silk twin for skin and hair care. Silkgel has various hair care benefits as being produced by the means of fermentation using plant starch as a natural source of energy.

The launch of vegan beauty products has doubled globally in the last five years, with 25 percent of women aged 16-24 seeking natural or organic hair care products made from vegan ingredients.
Silkgel answers high consumer demand for more vegan beauty options as an alternative to silicone, an ingredient defined as “nasty” by 53 percent of people.
