Emerald_Multifunctional_Skin_ActiveEmerald Kalama Chemical, a business group of Emerald Performance Materials, introduces Kalama® 3-Phenyl Propanol (3PP) FCC as a multifunctional ingredient offering cosmetics applications. Kalama® 3PP performs a range of functions to optimize the performance and desirability of personal care products.

Kalama® 3PP Enhances Sensory Experience

The new ingredient acts as a texture enhancer, stabilizer and process aid, while extending the antimicrobial efficacy of sodium benzoate, enabling the use of a green, skin friendly preservative in formulations up to pH 7.

Kalama® 3PP enhances stability, solubilization, sensory experience, makeup removal and emolliency in personal care products,” said Paul Wanrooij, business development director for Emerald’s Consumer Specialties business.

Boosts Antimicrobial Efficacy of Products

Kalama® 3PP also helps to address challenges with preservation. The selection of available antimicrobial actives continues to shrink due to regulatory pressure and consumer preferences. Kalama® 3PP enhances the preservative power of Purox® S and Kalama® sodium benzoates. Sodium benzoate has become a preferred antimicrobial because it is eco-friendly, gentle on the skin and effective against a broad range of bacteria, yeasts and molds.

Our applications scientists determined that our personal care ingredient, Kalama® 3PP, significantly boosts the antimicrobial efficacy of our sodium benzoate products. When used together, these ingredients help to ensure that hard-to-preserve products are sufficiently shielded against microbial contamination,” said Wanrooij.
