Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine is an emulsifier and a surfactant with cleansing properties which is commonly used in hair care products to condition and improve the appearance of hair. It was introduced as a replacement to silicones since they are not easily broken down, and this compound is biodegradable. It appears as a yellowish, waxy flake.

What is STEARAMIDOPROPYL DIMETHYLAMINE used for?

Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine is mainly used as an emulsifier, and surfactant in cosmetics, particularly in hair care products.
  • Hair care: It is used in shampoos or hair conditioners due to its antistatic effect. It serves as a mild surfactant that removes dirt build-up from the hair. It imparts a soft and silky feel to the hair, making it easier to comb through. It possesses a positive charge which can help offset the negative charge from shampooing the hair and is a cheaper alternative to other conditioners. It does not suppress foam and can be used with anionic surfactants and also helps to build the viscosity of the formulation. It is generally used at a maximum concentration of 0.01%-5%

Origin

Stearamidopropyl dimethylamine is obtained by mixing together refined vegetable oils with 3,3-dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) and heating the mixture.
