SORBITAN CAPRYLATE
Sorbitan Caprylate is a monoester of fatty acids (caprylic acid) and sorbitol. It is a substance with several uses. In addition to being a hydrotrope, it also functions as a co-emulsifier, stabilizing emulsions. Additionally, it may aid in increasing viscosity. Furthermore, it increases the efficiency of conventional preservatives.

Who supplies SORBITAN CAPRYLATE ?

What is SORBITAN CAPRYLATE used for?

The Sorbitan Fatty Acid Esters function as surfactants, emulsifying agents in cosmetics. These are used in a variety of products including skin care products, moisturizers, cleansing products, and eye and facial makeup. Its maximum use concentration in leave-on and rinse-off products has been found to be 1-1.5% and 1% respectively.
  • Facial care: It can serve as an emulsifier and aid in making a formulation more viscous. It works in tandem with preserving agents to increase their effectiveness. It works well with organic acids and aromatic alcohols. Preserving agents can be used at lower concentrations without losing any of their effectiveness. It is a natural-based thickener with emollient properties
  • Baby care: It works as an emulsifier cum emollient and benefits the skin. It boosts the effectiveness of traditional preservatives and allows for using lower amounts of preservatives

Origin

Typically, sorbitol is dehydrated to create hexitan, which is then esterified with the desired fatty acid, in this case, caprylic acid, to create sorbitan fatty acid esters like Sorbitan caprylate.

What does SORBITAN CAPRYLATE do in a formulation?

  • Emulsifying
  • Emulsion stabilising
  • Surfactant

Safety profile

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has reviewed Sorbitan Esters' safety. After analyzing the available scientific evidence, the CIR Expert Panel came to the conclusion that Sorbitan Caprylate is safe for use in cosmetic and personal care products.

Sorbitan esters were generally considered to be nontoxic when consumed in both short- and long-term studies. With the exception of Sorbitan Isostearate applied to the skin, they were typically minimal to mild skin irritants, according to one study. No sensitising effects were produced by sorbitan esters. When the fatty acid component was tested separately, it typically only produced minor irritability and sensitization and had no photosensitizing effects. Sorbitan esters did not cause eye irritation. There was no mutagenic potential in these esters or the corresponding fatty acids. Sorbitan esters generally caused only minor to mild skin irritation and were nonsensitizing in clinical tests. The general guidelines of the European Union's Cosmetics Regulation permit the use of sorbitan esters in cosmetics and personal care products marketed in Europe.
