SODIUM BICARBONATE

CAS Number 144-55-8
Chem/IUPAC Name: Sodium; hydrogen carbonate
EINECS/ELINCS No: 205-633-8
COSING REF No: 37736
SODIUM BICARBONATE
Sodium bicarbonate is a white, crystalline solid that frequently takes the form of a fine powder. It tastes alkaline and slightly salty. Sodium bicarbonate is used to regulate the acid-base balance of cosmetic products in personal care and cosmetics products. Sodium bicarbonate can also be used as an abrasive, a deodorant, and a buffer in cosmetics and personal care products.

What is SODIUM BICARBONATE used for?

The acid-base balance of cosmetic products is managed using sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate can also be used in oral care, as a deodorant, as a buffer, and as an abrasive in cosmetics and personal care products.
  • Skin care: It can be used to gently exfoliate your skin while sloughing off dead skin cells, which is especially useful if you have sensitive skin. It can be used as a body scrub and leaves the skin feeling supple and renewed. It can also be used to create nail and foot scrubs.
When it comes to deodorant, baking soda can be a good substitute, especially if you have sensitive skin. A dry or wet deodorant can be made using sodium bicarbonate and other ingredients. When applied topically, it may help reduce acne-causing bacteria thanks to its antibacterial properties. However, using baking soda to treat acne or to wash your face is not generally advised
  • Hair care: It can work as a hair clarifier and help reduce the product build-up of various hair products, by cleaning the hair well when mixed with your regular shampoo. It may also tackle greasy hair and can thus be used to formulate dry shampoos
  • Oral care: Some mouthwashes contain it as an ingredient. It has abrasive and anticaries qualities. It cleans teeth and gums mechanically, balances acid production in the mouth, and functions as an antiseptic to help prevent infections

Origin

Sodium Bicarbonate may be produced by the Solvay process. In this process, carbon dioxide is bubbled through a solution of sodium chloride and ammonia to precipitate Sodium Bicarbonate. Industrial processes use sodium carbonate to make sodium bicarbonate. Similar processes are used to make soda ash (the commercial quality of baking soda), which is mined as the ore trona and treated with carbon dioxide before being dissolved in water. From this solution, sodium bicarbonate solidifies as a precipitate. It can also be made by mixing carbon dioxide with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution.

What does SODIUM BICARBONATE do in a formulation?

  • Abrasive
  • Buffering
  • Deodorant
  • Oral care
  • Skin protecting

Safety profile

Sodium Carbonate was found to be generally recognized as safe (GRAS) for direct addition to food after the FDA reviewed their safety. Additionally, sodium bicarbonate has been approved as an OTC drug product's skin protectant and anticaries active ingredient. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel has evaluated the safety of sodium carbonate and related ingredients. After reviewing the available scientific evidence, the CIR Expert Panel came to the conclusion that sodium carbonate were safe to use as cosmetic ingredients.
