SODIUM ACRYLATES COPOLYMER
Sodium acrylates copolymer is the sodium salt of a polymer consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid or one of their simple esters. It works as a binder, film former and viscosity-increasing agent in cosmetics and personal care products.

Who supplies SODIUM ACRYLATES COPOLYMER ?

What is SODIUM ACRYLATES COPOLYMER used for?

Sodium acrylates copolymer is a synthetic, acrylic-based, salt-derived polymer that serves as a binder, film-forming agent, and texture enhancer in cosmetics.
  • Skin care: It aids in stabilizing, suspending, and binding essential ingredients. It has binding and film-forming properties at higher concentrations. When used in cosmetics, its highly purified forms are regarded as secure
  • Nail care: Although its use in product categories other than nail products is not as high, Acrylates Copolymer is used at up to 25% in items that come into contact with the skin. Its maximum use concentration is 98.6% in nail extenders (face and neck products)

Origin

Acrylates Copolymer, as a fully polymerized copolymer of methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, with a quantitative composition described as poly(ethyl acrylate-co-methyl methacrylate) 2:1, is produced by emulsion polymerization. A redox-initiated polymerization of the monomers ethyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate occurs through the use of a free radical donor redox initiator system. Polyethylene glycol mono stearyl ether is used as an emulsifier in the process, and an alkyl mercaptan is used as a chain-modifying agent. At the end of the process, an emulsifier is added to reduce foaming. Residual monomers and excess water are removed by water vapour distillation, and the pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted with sodium hydroxide.

What does SODIUM ACRYLATES COPOLYMER do in a formulation?

  • Binding
  • Film forming
  • Viscosity controlling

Safety profile

The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (formerly the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel) reviewed available scientific data supporting the safety of sodium acrylates copolymer and concluded they are safe in cosmetics and personal care products in the present practices of use and concentration when formulated to be non-irritating to the skin. This sodium acrylates copolymer is one of many acrylates copolymers that have undergone extensive research and have been approved for use in cosmetic products "when formulated to avoid irritation."

To prevent residues (also referred to as monomers) that can irritate the skin, this calls for the use of highly purified copolymers. When used to improve texture, stabilize, or suspend ingredients in an emulsion, sodium acrylates copolymer concentrations start at 0.5%. (a mix of oil- and water-soluble ingredients). When the objective is film-forming or binding agent, amounts up to 25% may be used.
