POLYBUTENE
Polybutene is an excellent formula-manipulating ingredient that works in the background towards binding and thickening cosmetic formulations. It does not have any direct benefits for skin but aids in improving the consistency and feel of products. Polybutene has a naturally sticky texture that combines well with almost all the other ingredients. It is made up of large molecules that do not penetrate the surface of the skin and is therefore safe for use. It is also practically odorless and colorless, so it does not impact the smell or look of a formulation. The chemical formula of Polybutene is C4H8.

What is POLYBUTENE used for?

The primary use of Polybutene is increasing the viscosity of a cosmetic formulation to make it thicker and thus easier to apply. It binds all the ingredients in a product and prevents them from separating. The natural sticky consistency of this ingredient also makes it a great addition to products targeting the removal of unwanted hair. Further, Polybutene adds gloss and shine to cosmetics like lip balms and lipsticks. It manipulates the formulations to improve their feel and consistency without affecting their physical properties like smell and appearance. Polybutene also carries no benefits for the surface it is applied to.

Origin

Polybutene is made from petroleum and is a synthetic ingredient. It is synthesized primarily from the monomer isobutylene which is derived from crude oil or natural gas. Through polymerization, isobutylene molecules undergo a chemical reaction to form long chains of polybutene. Catalysts and controlled conditions facilitate this process. This reaction results in a clear and colorless liquid known as Polybutene. Natural substitutes of Polybutene include beeswax, carnauba wax, and castor oil.

What does POLYBUTENE do in a formulation?

  • Binding
  • Depilatory
  • Viscosity controlling

Safety profile

Polybutene is a safe ingredient due to its inability to penetrate the surface of the skin. It does not pose any risks, especially when used within the recommended concentrations of 4% or less. This compound is also non-sensitizing and non-comedogenic, rendering it safe for all skin types. However, a patch test is recommended before widespread use. Additionally, Polybutene is considered a vegan ingredient since it is synthetic and does not contain any animal-derived substances. But, it is worth noting that Polybutene has considerable environmental concerns as it is non-biodegradable and, therefore, not sustainable for use.
