PERLITE
Perlite is a naturally occurring mineral used in cosmetics for its oil-absorbing and exfoliating properties. Derived from volcanic glass, it is processed into a fine powder. In cosmetics, Perlite acts as a gentle exfoliant, helping to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores, promoting a smoother complexion. Its high absorbency makes it valuable in products like foundations, powders, and skincare formulations designed for oily or acne-prone skin. Perlite appears as a soft, white powder and has the chemical formula Al2CaFe2K2MgNa2O12Si.

What is PERLITE used for?

Perlite finds versatile applications in cosmetic and personal care products due to its unique properties.
  • Cosmetic products: In products like foundations, powders, and blushes, Perlite helps control shine by absorbing excess oil, resulting in a matte finish that lasts longer. Its gentle exfoliating nature is harnessed in exfoliating scrubs, aiding in the removal of dead skin cells and promoting a smoother skin texture. Additionally, Perlite's lightweight particles contribute to the airy and smooth texture of pressed powders and loose powders, enhancing the application experience
  • Skin care: It has exfoliating properties making it a valuable ingredient in facial scrubs and cleansers, promoting a more even complexion by gently sloughing off dull skin. Moreover, Perlite's oil-absorbing capabilities make it suitable for formulations targeting oily or combination skin. It helps control excess sebum production, minimizing the appearance of shine and reducing the likelihood of clogged pores

Origin

Perlite is formed through the rapid heating of volcanic glass rocks, causing them to expand and form lightweight, porous particles. This expansion occurs due to the presence of water and other volatile substances trapped within the glass. The resulting material is then milled into the fine powder used in cosmetics.

What does PERLITE do in a formulation?

  • Absorbent
  • Bulking

Safety profile

Perlite is considered safe for use in cosmetic and personal care products when used within the recommended guidelines. Generally, Perlite is used in lower concentrations, often ranging from around 1% to 5%. For products like loose powders, the percentage might be higher. This ingredient has been deemed non-toxic and non-irritating to the skin when properly formulated. However, patch testing is recommended.
