Climbazole is an antifungal agent used in cosmetics to combat dandruff and various scalp conditions caused by fungal infections like Malassezia. As a broad-spectrum antifungal, Climbazole works by inhibiting the growth of fungi, preventing their proliferation on the scalp. It is commonly added to hair care products like shampoos and scalp treatments. This synthetic ingredient is insoluble in water but can be dissolved in surfactants and perfume oils. What is CLIMBAZOLE used for?

Origin

Climbazole is synthesized through a multistep chemical process. Initially, 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzonitrile undergoes a reaction with diethylamine to form 4-chloro-3-nitrobenzamide. Subsequently, this compound is subjected to reduction using a reducing agent like iron powder, resulting in the formation of 4-chloro-3-aminobenzamide. Finally, the aminobenzamide compound reacts with chloroacetyl chloride to produce Climbazole. It is also known as Baypival.

Safety profile

Climbazole is a safe and non-sensitizing ingredient that does not have any major side effects. In rinse-off products like shampoos, it can be used up to the concentrations of 0.5%. Whereas, only 0.2% can be used in leave-on products. It is necessary to stick to the recommended guidelines to avoid adverse reactions. Overexposure to Climbazole can cause rashes, redness, and itching. Although well-tolerated by most skin types, a patch test is recommended.
