CI 77266 or Carbon black is used as a colorant in the cosmetic industry. It has one of the highest coloring powers and is added to either enhance the color of the cosmetic product or change it completely. CI 77266 ingredient looks like black powder and is a form of paracrystalline carbon with a very high surface-area-to-volume ratio. However, it is still less than that of activated carbon. It is mostly used in eye makeup and is responsible for most of the black pigment in them. Further, CI 77266 can also be used in skin products and nail enamels. In cosmetic products, the highest permissible concentration of carbon black is 10%.

What is CI 77266 used for?

CI 77266 is used as a colorant in makeup products like liquid eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara, and water-based nail varnishes. CI 77266 cosmetics have the deepest black color and do not require mixing with any other substance.

Origin

Carbon Black is manufactured by the incomplete combustion of heavy petroleum products such as coal tar, fluid catalytic cracking tar, and ethylene cracking tar. Safety profile

CI 77266 is safe to be used in cosmetics as long as it is in a concentration of not more than 10%. Since its only function is to add color to makeup products, there are no concerns regarding CI 77266 safety, and is also halal. However, black carbon becomes toxic if inhaled, causing problems like lung irritation and coughing. If exposed to high levels over a long period of time, the particles get lodged deep in the lungs, becoming highly toxic. Therefore, CI 77266 in cosmetics should not be used in products like perfumes and powders. Not having any animal components and derivatives makes CI 77266 vegan.
