Although it is a cosmetic colorant, the uses of CI 73360 are quite limited - it is added to give a reddish or pinkish hue to formulations. CI 73360 in cosmetics is quite visually appealing as it makes the products prettier, thus increasing its consumability. It can be found in products like blushes, lipsticks and also sometimes in toothpastes.

Origin

CI 73360 is a synthetic ingredient that is made of coal tar or petroleum sources. Red 30 ingredient is followed by ‘lake’ as it is precipitated with metal salts like calcium, aluminum, barium, etc.

Safety profile

CI 73360 is safe and has been approved for use in cosmetics since its only function is to add color to a product. However, its concentration cannot be more than 10% in any formulation. Also, it can be slightly toxic if accidently consumed. It is recommended to do a patch test before full application of products with red 30 lake. Lasty, CI 73360 is halal and vegan.
