CI 47005 or quinoline yellow is a greenish-yellow colored dye approved by the USFDA for use in cosmetics. It is a mixture of monosulfonates, disulfonates, and trisulfonates. It is permitted for use in cosmetics in the US and is also known as D&C Yellow 10.

What is CI 47005 used for?

CI 47005 is used as a cosmetic colorant. It is used in non-oxidative hair dyeing products at a maximum concentration of 0.5%. It is intended for once-monthly use with a typical application of 100 ml. It is also found in shampoos, face, and lip products.

Origin

CI 47005 is manufactured by condensing quinaldine with phthalic anhydride to give the unsulfonated dye, which is then sulfonated with oleum. It can also be made by sulfonating 2-(2-quinolyl)indane-1,3-dione or a mixture containing about two-thirds 2-(2-quinolyl)indane-1,3-dione and one third 2-(2-(6- methylquinolyl))indane-1,3-dione.
