CI 19140 or Tartrazine is a very common colorant used in variety of cosmetic products. It is used globally for imparting the color yellow (lemon shade). It has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) for use in cosmetics but is regulated.

What is CI 19140 used for?

CI 19140 is used as a colorant imparting lemon yellow hue to cosmetic products such as eye shadows, perfumes, facial powders. For hair, it is used as a coloring agent ('direct dye') at a maximum concentration of 0.5% in the finished cosmetic product.

Origin

Cl 19140 is a synthetic (monoazo) dye made from coal tar. It is commercially available as a sodium salt or the water-insoluble aluminium lake.

Safety profile

Tartrazine appears to cause the most allergic and intolerance reactions of all the azo dyes, particularly among asthmatics and those with an aspirin intolerance. It may have potential allergenicity but is not likely to be mutagenic or carcinogenic in humans.
