CI 15510, also known as acid orange 7 is an orange-colored, water-soluble dye, used as a cosmetic colorant. It is a primary color that is very concentrated. It has been approved for use in cosmetics by the European Union (E-Code Cosmetic Color) standards and the United States (FD&C).

What is CI 15510 used for?

CI 15510 is used as a cosmetic colorant in various personal care products. In both non-oxidative and oxidative hair dye formulations, the non-reactive dye Acid Orange 7 is used as a direct hair coloring agent up to an on-head concentration of 0.5%. In Annex IV, part 1 - list of coloring agents permitted for use in cosmetic products, except those intended for application in the vicinity of the eyes, particularly eye make-up and eye make-up remover - Acid Orange 7 is listed as CI 15510.

The FDA allows the use of a maximum of not more than 6.00% for skin products. In the case of wanting to use water-soluble colors in formulas like creams, lotions, gels, and serums, this type of color is not recommended. This type of color is not for mixing in Makeup.

Origin

CI 15510 is produced by azo coupling of β-naphthol and diazonium derivative of sulfanilic acid.

CI 15510 has been approved for use in cosmetics by the European Union (E-Code Cosmetic Color) standards and the United States (FD&C). It is irritating to the eyes, respiratory system, and skin. Based on the low margin of safety, the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety of the European Commission (SCCS) is of the opinion that the use of Acid Orange 7 as a hair dye ingredient up to a final on-head concentration of 0.5% under oxidative and non-oxidative conditions poses a risk to the health of the consumer.
