Chem/IUPAC Name: Hexadecyl 2-ethylhexanoate
EINECS/ELINCS No: 261-619-1
COSING REF No: 32603
CETYL ETHYLHEXANOATE
Cetyl ethylhexanoate is a clear and odorless liquid that has a non-oily feel. It is a synthetic ester. It is primarily employed as a texture enhancer and emollient for the skin and hair. Cetyl ethylhexanoate's abilities as an emollient enable it to maintain the skin's moisture levels as a bonus benefit to enhancing texture and sensory feel. It has a molecular weight of 368.6 and its chemical formula is C24H48O2.

What is CETYL ETHYLHEXANOATE used for?

The texture-enhancing properties of cetyl ethylhexanoate are used frequently in cosmetic formulations as an emollient, emulsifier, thickener, and surfactant. Lipsticks and rinse-off products frequently contain it. It can be found in cosmetics in percentages ranging from 0.5 to 77.3%.
  • Skin care: It is a texture enhancer that increases a product's spreadability and gives the skin a velvety, silky, and non-greasy feel. Additionally, advised uses for cetyl ethylhexanoate include dry oil sprays, makeup removers, matte finish makeup, and oily skin moisturisers. It can make emulsions more fluid, which changes the rheology of the final product.
  • Hair care: Because of its emollient qualities, cetyl ethylhexanoate can be used in hair care products to replenish moisture for soft, healthy hair. It gives hair strands a protective layer coating that enhances slip and makes combing easier. Additionally, it evens out the surface of the hair, strengthening it and repairing damage without leaving an oily residue.

Origin

Cetyl ethylhexanoate is a synthetic ester of 2-ethylhexanoic acid and cetyl alcohol. A fatty alcohol called cetyl alcohol is created by reducing palmitic acid, which is obtained from palm oil. By reacting cetyl alcohol and 2-ethylhexanoic acid, cetyl ethylhexanoate is synthesized using the traditional Fischer esterification method.

What does CETYL ETHYLHEXANOATE do in a formulation?

  • Emollient
  • Emulsifying
  • Moisturising
  • Surfactant

Safety profile

The safety of 16 alkyl ethylhexanoates, including cetyl ethylhexanoate, as used in cosmetics was evaluated by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel. The highest leave-on use reported for any of the alkyl ethylhexanoates is 52% cetyl ethylhexanoate in lipstick formulations and 77.3% cetyl ethylhexanoate in rinse-off formulations used near the eye. The panel looked over any clinical data on these ingredients that was available. The panel came to the conclusion that these ingredients are safe when used in cosmetic formulations under the current usage and concentration patterns when they are made to be non-irritating.
