CAS Number 123-95-5
Chem/IUPAC Name: Butyl stearate
EINECS/ELINCS No: 204-666-5
COSING REF No: 74752
BUTYL STEARATE
Butyl Stearate is a fatty acid ester that works as an emollient in the cosmetic and personal care industry. It is a highly stable organic chemical ingredient that has softening and smoothening effects on the skin. It is also known by other names such as Butyl Octadecanoate and Octadecanoic Acid. Butyl Stearate is an excellent alternative to other harmful emollients since it is considered a green chemical. Its low viscosity enables it to reduce and control the thickness of cosmetics such as lipsticks for smooth application and improved appeal. The chemical formula of Butyl Stearate is C22H44O2 and it can appear in the form of a colorless to pale yellow liquid or a waxy solid.

What is BUTYL STEARATE used for?

The uses of Butyl Stearate in the personal care and cosmetic industry are manifold. Primarily, it acts as a skin conditioning and lubricating agent that deeply nourishes the skin to elevate dryness and flakiness. It forms a non-greasy coating on the skin to trap moisture and protect the surface from harsh environmental damage. In nail varnishes, this ingredient works as a plasticizer and a water repellant. Butyl Stearate is also a great masking agent to curb unpleasant odor in a formulation, especially in fragrances. Further, Butyl Stearate decreases the viscosity of formulations to manage consistency and make the products easier to apply.

Origin

Butyl stearate is synthesized via esterification between stearic acid and butanol using an acid catalyst. The reaction substitutes the hydroxyl group of butanol with the carboxyl group of stearic acid, forming the ester bond. This process is conducted under controlled conditions to ensure high yield and purity. After completion, the product undergoes purification to remove impurities and make it suitable for use in cosmetics.

What does BUTYL STEARATE do in a formulation?

  • Emollient
  • Masking
  • Nail conditioning
  • Plasticiser
  • Skin conditioning
  • Smoothing
  • Viscosity controlling

Safety profile

Butyl Stearate is a non-toxic and safe ingredient that is good for the skin when used in small quantities. It is also non-sensitizing but can be mildly irritating for sensitive skin. A patch test is, therefore, recommended. Butyl Stearate is also safe for the environment and may or may not be considered vegan - depending upon its source.
