BENTONITE

Bentonite is a type of clay that has the ability to absorb excess oil, dirt, and toxins from the surface of the skin. This property makes it a common ingredient in skin care products like cleansers and facial masks. Further, Bentonite is also used to improve the texture of hair and remove any impurities present on the scalp. It is also known as CI 77004. In its raw form, Bentonite appears as a fine powder that is gray or cream in color. Upon addition of water, it forms a slippery paste that has an earthy or mineral-like odor. The formula for Bentonite is Al₂O₃₄SiO₂H₂O.

What is BENTONITE used for?

Bentonite has many benefits for both skin and hair. Its primary role in any formulation is deep penetration and absorption of excess oil and dirt from the surface that it is applied to. This reduces shine and prevents acne on the skin. In skin care products, Bentonite also calms and soothes the skin to reduce redness and inflammation. It makes the hair healthier and the skin softer. Bentonite is widely used in cosmetics to improve the texture of the products.

Origin

Bentonite clay is a naturally occurring ingredient that is made from sedimentary rocks and volcanic ash. This ingredient can take up to millions of years to form.

Safety profile

Bentonite is a natural ingredient that is safe for hair and skin when used up to concentrations of 5%. On certain skin types, it can cause allergic reactions and sensitivity, especially when used over the recommended use percentage. Further, this ingredient is non-comedogenic and does not clog pores. A patch test must be performed prior to full usage. Lastly, Bentonite is both vegan and halal.
