Eastman sucrose acetate isobutyrate (SAIB) is a low-odor, thermally stable liquid produced by the controlled esterification of sugar (sucrose) with acetic and isobutyric anhydrides. It is compatible with a broad range of resins, plasticizers, and solvents, which makes it especially useful in the formulation of nail lacquers. Eastman SAIB provides the following benefits in this application:

In its pure form, SAIB is a high-viscosity liquid. Eastman offers low-viscosity blends for ease of handling. Eastman SAIB-90 contains 10% Eastman solvents and Eastman SAIB-90EA contains 10% ethyl acetate as the blend component.

Eastman SAIB-90 and SAIB-90EA are useful in the formulation of various types of nail lacquers, including base and topcoats. They can help produce coatings with higher nonvolatile content, resulting in lower solvent requirements and greater coverage. The low solution viscosity of Eastman SAIB allows excellent flow-out on nail surfaces. It helps formulators achieve a good balance of flexibility and film hardness.
Plasticizers Triacetin Eastman triacetin is used as a plasticizer for cellulosic resins and is compatible in all proportions with cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, and ethyl cellulose. It is useful as a plasticizer in nail polish formulations due to its high solvency power and low volatility. Eastman triacetin imparts plasticity and flow to laminating resins, particularly at low temperatures.
Solvents Eastman methyl acetate, high purity Eastman methyl acetate is a high-purity, mild-odor, active solvent that can be used in a broad range of coatings. Its fast evaporating nature makes is especially suited for use in nail care products. Methyl acetate is exempt from regulation as a VOC under U.S. federal law. It provides fast solvent release and short dry-to-touch time. it can also be used in non-acetone nail polish removers.
Film formers—cellulose ester Eastman cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) Cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) is a cellulose ester compatible with numerous cross-linking resins. It produces clear films, reduces surface tack and mottling, minimizes cratering, improves flow, and provides intercoat adhesion with good UV stability. It is used as a film former in nail polish formulations for fast solvent release. Compared to nitrocellulose, cellulose esters are nonyellowing and have excellent clarity and stability. Eastman’s cellulose esters are easily pigmented and meet safety regulations.
