Preservation tends to be a second thought, or sometimes not even a thought at all in cosmetic formulations. Furthermore, as consumers look to natural and clean cosmetic products, preservative-free tends to be a sought-after claim. But, have you thought about how preservation can extend the shelf-life of your product and further reduce waste due to spoilage or contamination? If you have thought about this, your second thought may have been, how can I preserve my formulation in a natural and sustainable way, while maintaining the safety aspect for the consumer?

As we know, in the personal care industry, you will find a wide range of cosmetic application forms: emulsion based - oil-in-water, water-in-oil, surfactant based – shampoos, aqueous gels, and anhydrous based – lip sticks and facial powders. All these applications need a product protection strategy, like antimicrobials, chelators and antioxidants ingredients. Incorporating strategic ingredients with environmentally sustainable solutions will call for us to look at 4 responsible approaches (e.g responsibly source raw material feedstocks, biodegradability, external certifications and product multifunctionality) that will help us to incorporate sustainability in cosmetics for the sustainability of the future. In this presentation we will discuss how to drive environmentally sustainable preservation without compromising safety or product performance, emphasizing the need for preservation in a natural and understandable way.

Anna Howe Anna Howe is an Applied Technology Manager, North America, for the Personal Care business of Evonik Corporation at the new Business & Innovation Center in Richmond, Virginia. Anna responsibility focuses on new product developments, formulations, performance evaluations, test method development for claims, and technical services. Anna earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in Blacksburg, VA.
Anna joined the Personal Care Group of Evonik Corp. in 1997. Prior to joining Evonik, Anna held positions of increasing responsibility at Inolex Chemical Company, Rhône-Poulenc (Rhodia) and Alcolac Chemical Corporation. Further, Anna is a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists and holds several application patents as well as authored several scientific papers in the personal care arena. Through Anna great accomplishments, one of most esteem accomplishments is “Family”.
