This question was recently put to the SpecialChem Community and their views on developing a preservative-free product. The response to this question by close to 75% of SpecialChem readers was that they would not feel comfortable launching a preservative-free product, which I feel is quite a significant factor for the safety of the consumer. These figures are based on almost 125 respondents in the SpecialChem Community from around the world.
