A History of Cosmetics in the UK

SpecialChem / Nick Morante – Feb 8, 2008

In the past we have discussed the cosmetics industry in the EU, China, Poland and some other countries that are growing along with this industry. So let's talk about cosmetics in one of the more established markets, the United Kingdom. The history of cosmetics in the UK dates back to the Roman Conquest and to all the conquests after that such as the Saxons and the Normans. Most of the history of cosmetics in England has been recorded from the Middle Ages. In Medieval England, the cosmetics market was centered in London of course, but most products came from areas in France, Italy and Spain. Recipes for most cosmetics were mainly aimed at the upper class, and circulated throughout the 13th century. Books were printed in both Latin and Anglo-Norman and show very close links to the Mediterranean regions especially in terms of the ingredients used. At that particular time, cosmetics were very closely linked to the medical profession as it also dealt with the welfare of the body. A little Alchemy thrown in between didn't hurt either.
