An alcohol-free hand sanitizer that contains seven moisturizing
ingredients is the latest offering from skin care brand Gold Bond Ultimate.
Gold Bond is part of the product portfolio of Chattem, the US-based personal
care and healthcare player that was recently acquired by Sanofi-Aventis.
"This is the first national brand to offer a Sanitizer that's
anywhere near this moisturizing in traditional channels (Mass, Drug, and
Grocery stores)," Lucas Mininger, Gold Bond Marketing Manager told
Consumer demand for moisturizing hand sanitizer
The Hand Sanitizer Moisturizer is the result of several years of development,
according to Gold Bond, who wanted to create an effective two-in-one product
after its consumer research revealed the biggest complaint to be the skin
dryness associated with alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
Alcohol is a solvent which is known to break down the skin's lipid
barriers, which results in a loss of moisture.
Chattem's research also showed that 42 percent of people who used
a sanitizer used a moisturizer directly afterward, indicating clear demand
for a product that fights germs as well as moisturizing the skin.
Patent-pending alcohol-free formula
Additionally, Jason Sondgeroth, product development director for Gold
Bond, underlined that it is important to maintain skin health through
using moisturizers as dry, damaged skin is more susceptible to germs and
"We created a formula that not only kills germs, but also contains
seven hydrating moisturizers, including a Phospholipid Complex to help
restore the lipid barrier in the skin to lock in lasting moisture,"
The patent-pending formula of the product contains the antimicrobial
active ingredient Benzethonium Chloride, and has been proven to kill 99.9
percent of common germs and bacteria in 15 seconds, according to Gold
An additional advantage of the formula is that it has a clean, fresh
scent rather than an alcohol or chemical smell, the company claimed.
The sanitizer, which is available in three sizes, is being sold across
the US at mass retailers and smaller grocery stores.
