Whatever the style, color, texture or length of a person's hair, the way it looks and feels is important for the personal sense of well-being. Thus, people want to keep their hair in good condition, and prevent uncomfortable reactions such as the formation of dandruff or oily hair, which may often lead to itching sensations. To help manufacturers develop products that combat these reactions, Laboratoires Sérobiologiques (LS), the active ingredients business of Cognis - which is now part of the BASF Group - has launched the natural complex Sanicapyl™ (INCI name (US): Sodium Lauroyl Lactylate (and) Butylene Glycol (and) Piper Negrum (pepper) Fruit Extract (and) Inga Alba Bark). This active ingredient helps to rebalance the scalp to overcome dandruff conditions, while beautifying the hair.
Oily dandruff conditions are mainly caused by an excess production of sebum, which can be aggravated by bacterial proliferation or hyperkeratosis. Closely linked to this is an inflammation of the skin that causes the scalp to itch and leaves hair shafts weakened and looking dull. Maintaining a healthy scalp and keeping hair shiny and
in good condition requires proper care. While conventional synthetic molecules are able to reduce dandruff, they are not very effective at regulating the production of sebum. As a result, the itching persists and the hair remains looking dull and lackluster. Whereas the new plant-based Sanicapyl™ from LS works in many ways to ensure a healthy scalp and to improve hair beauty with perceptible and visible results.
The new active ingredient was shown to exert a moisturizing as well as an anti-inflammatory activity (in vitro tests). Clinical studies highlighted its capability in helping to reduce itching sensations and to regulate the production of sebum, which may contribute to an overall scalp soothing effect. In addition, it has proven anti-dandruff properties: in clinical tests, a shampoo containing one percent of Sanicapyl™ was shown to reduce dandruff just as effectively as a shampoo containing one percent of a benchmark active ingredient.
Further tests confirmed that Sanicapyl™ had significant antimicrobial properties on Malassezia furfur and Malassezia globosa.
Compared to the benchmark active ingredient, the new natural complex from LS was also shown to offer additional hair beauty properties, by enhancing hair radiance and boosting hair softness.
"Sanicapyl™ meets consumers' demands for innovative and holistic hair care products that visibly and perceptibly relieve the main scalp disorders and improve hair beauty. Furthermore the naturally provided effectiveness of Sanicapyl has a real market value," says Valérie Basocak, LS Senior Product Manager. "As such, this innovative active ingredient can have a positive impact on people's sense of well-being." Sanicapyl™ is suitable for all hair types and can be incorporated into shampoo, lotion and conditioner formulations.
