Edward M. Petrie has been active in adhesives and advanced materials for 50 years – both in the formulation and the end-use sides of the industry. He has a BS (Chemical Engineering) and MS (Polymer Science) degrees from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA from Duquesne University.

His expertise includes adhesive material and process selection, testing, formulating, substrate preparation, and quality control with emphasis on the end-user application and performance requirements. Major projects consist of problem solving, cost reduction, formulation optimization, selection of joint design and production processes, and failure analysis. Applications include structural as well as non-structural joining of all materials.

Throughout his industrial career, Mr. Petrie has been employed by two major global corporations (ABB and Westinghouse). He began his career as an internal consultant in adhesives and polymeric materials. In both corporations he was part of the Central Research Laboratories and assisted all of the operating divisions within the organization.

Mr. Petrie is considered an international authority on adhesives and has written the popular Handbook of Adhesives and Sealants (McGraw-Hill, 2007 2nd edition and 1999 1st edition). Mr. Petrie has also given numerous training seminars on adhesives and adhesion to corporations, universities, government organizations, and professional societies.

Currently, Mr. Petrie is an independent consultant and sole proprietor of EMP Solutions. He is also Technical Advisor and Consultant to adhesives.specialchem.com, an online service platform dedicated entirely to adhesives and sealants.

A Word from Edward M. Petrie :
New materials; pricing pressures; tougher environmental issues; continual customer requests to do it better, faster, and cheaper -- this is the lament of adhesive and sealant formulators worldwide. Relying chiefly on innovation and brainpower, today’s adhesive formulator will meet the continual challenges that are part of this industry.
